Mounted equine Search & Rescue Team (MSAR)
Mounted Search and Rescue units have several advantages over their Human and Canine counterparts. With a trained Searcher in the saddle they have a distinct height advantage over the ground searcher when looking for the lost subject. Mounted units also move four times faster than humans and can stay out on patrol for long periods of time. They also serve as a containment tool, man tracking from the saddle, radio relay, patrol units, logistical support, visual observers (VO) for the RPV unit and scent detectors for both living human and cadavers.
Peace River Search and Rescue maintains a large Mounted SAR unit in the State of Florida for assisting search efforts. All teams meet ASTM standards F2794, pass a rigorous Horse Rider Evaluation and train on a regular basis.

PRSAR Horses are scent trained similar to their k9 counterparts
This is a new concept being used by PRSAR, the Air Scenting Detection Equine. Air Scenting is a detection tool used for search. Horses are trained to follow airborne scent (Living Human or Human Cadaver) to its source, which could lead to the missing person. The scenting horse goes into the scent locating behavior when given its cue. While riding on patrol, the horse reacts to the presence of target odor. The rider then lets the horse take them to the source. These trained equine have proven very reliable.
