Trailing Team
These K9 Team’s are trained to both in House and National standards. Teams meet FEMA 508 Type 1 standards. All handlers are trained man trackers and have expert wilderness skills. Our Trailing teams have some of the most demanding training in the country. Our training program is component based and teams train continuously to keep their skills sharp. PRSAR has 3 Levels of Trailing teams with their skills broken out into Wilderness, Suburban and Urban trailing skills.
K-9 TRAILING TEST
LEVEL 1 BASIC WILDERNESS
This test is to determine if the PRSAR canine is capable of performing a trailing exercise in a simulation of wilderness conditions which are encountered during working situations by the PRSAR work dog team. This test is designed to show the dogs’ ability and proficiency and also the handler’s control of the dog.
Scenario: Our lost person (Victim) is reported missing near a wilderness area. The PRSAR team will begin a trailing search from the PLS. The trail will cross 2 roads and come to an end at some point. The team will have to locate the proper start point and then trail directly to the victim.
For this test, the handler and canine will be hidden from view prior to the test start. The Victim will be an unknown person, not regularly worked with the canine. The Certifying Agent will follow the handler and in no way interfere with or distract the canine team. In the event the team loses the trail and the handler is made aware of the same, he/she will be given five (5) minutes by the Certifying Agent to recover the track and continue. The Certifying Agent will advise the handler when the five (5) minutes have elapsed and will notify the team that they have failed this test. Due to climatic conditions, the age of the trail will be at the discretion of the Certifying Agent.
The canine will start the trail 2 hours old and trail at least one mile. Surface cover at the start of the trail will be dirt and vegetation, with a water crossing if available and cross two (2) fresh human trails aged 15 minutes. There will be at least 2 turns in this trail. The subjects will remain at the end of the trail until found and identified by the K9 from a group.
All tests given the K9 team will be on a pass/fail basis. The Certifying Agent will determine if the team will be certified upon the completion of the test. The handler and dog will be considered as a team and it is the team who will be certified. If the dog changes handlers, a new team exists and the team will need to be certified.—NO EXCEPTIONS! This in-house certification will be valid for one (1) year from the date of issue.

K-9 TRAILING TEST

This test is to determine if the PRSAR canine is capable of performing a trailing exercise in a simulation of conditions which are encountered during working situations by the PRSAR work dog team. This test is designed to show the dogs’ ability and proficiency and also the handler’s control of the dog.
Scenario: Our lost person (Victim) is reported missing at a shopping mall at night. The PRSAR team will begin a trailing search from the PLS. The trail will cross 2 roads and come to an end at some point. The trail may end in either an Urban or Wilderness environment.
For this test, the handler and canine will be hidden from view prior to the test start. The Victim will be an unknown person, not regularly worked with the canine. The Certifying Agent will follow the handler and in no way interfere with or distract the canine team. In the event the team loses the trail and the handler is made aware of the same, he/she will be given ten (10) minutes by the Certifying Agent to recover the track and continue. The Certifying Agent will advise the handler when the ten (10) minutes have elapsed and will notify the team that they have failed this test. Due to climatic conditions, the age of the trail can be changed at the discretion of the Certifying Agent.
The canine will start the trail four (4) hours old and trail at least one mile in length. Surface cover at the start of the trail will be at least 1500 feet on pavement, with one turn and with a cross track of two (2) fresh human trails aged 60 minutes. K-9 TRAILING TEST

This test is to determine if the PRSAR canine is capable of performing a Urban trailing exercise in a simulation of conditions which are encountered during working situations by the PRSAR work dog team. This test is designed to show the dogs’ ability and proficiency and also the handler’s control of the dog.
Scenario: Our lost person (Victim) is reported missing near a wooded area. The PRSAR team will begin a trailing search from the PLS. The trail will cross 2 roads and come to an end at some point. The team will be advised that our Victim may have been seen near the downtown area. The Team will transport to the LKP and the Team must re acquire the trail. The victim will be located in a downtown park area and the K9 MUST find and identify the victim from the crowd.
Cadaver/Forensic Recovery/Human Remains Detector Teams
These highly trained volunteer professionals maintain their skills on constant bases. The dogs are continually worked to give them the widest scent range to experience. All team members are SARTEC 2 HRD (or equivalent), have taken a crime scene preservation class from a sworn law enforcement agency and have high levels of training on both land and water in evidence discovery and recovery procedures and have passed a background check. The team is available for military and historical finds in and out of country.
CADAVER SEARCH TEST
This test is designed to evaluate the K9 Team’s ability and proficiency in searching designated areas for the scent of a cadaver.
The SAR canine handler must provide the testing Master Trainer(s) Proof of Completion of the following courses prior to testing:
1. Crime Scene Preservation Course
2. HAZMAT Awareness Course
3. Blood borne Pathogens Course
4. NIMS and ICS Training Courses, NIMS-700, 800, 809
ICS-100 and ICS-200

The minimum acceptable level required to pass is 80%.
For certificationthe team CANNOT miss more than 2 aids in all phases of testing. A “team miss” is defined as any incorrect response by the K9 team.
With the exception of the building and the water searches, the minimum search area must be 50 yards by 50 yards. The area size for the building and water searches will be at the discretion of the Certifying Judge.
One test area will NOT contain an aid. At least one of the test areas will contain the remains of an animal.
A total of ten (10), scent aids must be provided for the test; six (6) of the aids must be less than three (3) months old and four (4) must be more than three (3) months old. Each must consist of bone and soft tissue.

search.
In order to certify, a team must successfully find at least Eight (8) of the Ten (10) scent hides.
Handler: The handler will advise the Judges how the dog will indicate. He/She may enter the search area to direct the dog. This test may be done on or off lead. The dog's indication must be obvious to the Master Trainer.
All tests given the Cadaver Search Team will be on a pass/fail basis. The Judge will determine if the team will be certified upon the completion of the test.
The handler and dog will be considered as a team and it is the team who will be certified. If the dog changes handlers, a new team exists and the team will need to be certified.

This certification will be valid for one (1) year from the date of issue.
